Interiors and Statuary
Preserving a historic building or sacred space is an awesome responsibility for any organization. At Wiebold Studio, we consider it a privilege to lend our expertise to these projects, ensuring that future generations enjoy these incredible spaces.Churches, synagogues, temples, mosque and other houses of worship are often decorated with artwork and statuary of incredible artistic, religious and historic value and require careful attention. Wiebold Studio has also served schools, colleges, universities, libraries and museums, preserving statues, stained glass, murals and paintings. With skilled artisans in a variety of disciplines, the conservators bring a experience with multiple media to every project - in our studio or onsite.
St. Xavier Church Restoration
The elaborate painted murals behind the altar of St. Xavier Catholic Church in downtown Cincinnati are a highlight of one of the city's most beautiful houses of worship. But years of candle smoke and other environmental effects had begun to take a toll on the vibrant paintings. The varnish had yellowed and the colors had shifted.Wiebold Studio expert conservators cleaned these elaborate paintings thoroughly and removed the yellowed varnish. Then, the artisans repaired portions of the mural, reapplying gold leaf to the halos of the saints in the mural. The murals were then re-varnished to protect the murals into the future.
St. Peter in Chains

Floor-to-ceiling murals are among the many decorative features inside the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains in downtown Cincinnati. This centerpiece of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati experienced a small fire in the early 1990s that left behind a layer of smoke and soot covering these magnificent pieces of artwork.
Wiebold Studio delicately cleaned these gold and brown-toned murals and restored the cathedral walls to its vibrant colors. In addition to religious events, the cathedral’s location and acoustics make it popular for concerts and visiting convention delegations. The revived artwork also draws the interest of religious art enthusiasts and tourists.
Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption

As one of only 66 minor basilicas in the United States, the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Ky., is a tourist destination as well as a community venue, concert hall and house of worship. During a major renovation, Wiebold Studio performed restoration of metal work within the church. Our skilled metalsmiths repaired and restored brass paneling and other ornate metal work around the altar as well as metal on the communion rail and tabernacle. Gold leaf adornments on the support columns also received attention.
Edward Lee McLain High School

A gift from entrepreneur and inventor Edward Lee McClain in 1914, this high school in Greenfield, Ohio, contains a vast art collection, including paintings, murals and statues. But years of use and abuse eventually led the building to be slated for demolition. The community banded together to raise funds to renovate the Georgian Revival school, including restoration of its art collection.
The building contains dozens of large plaster statues, made to look like marble, replicas of the world's greatest statues - such as the Venus de Milo and Aphrodite, as well as American leaders, like George Washington. The statues were severely distressed, and Wiebold Studio made significant repairs to the statues and preserved them for future generations.
The school restoration project as a whole received numerous awards, including the National Trust for Historic Preservation "Historic Neighborhood School" honor award. The school also draws individuals from across the country to see the artwork collection.
Mother of Mercy High School
This statue of Mary is the hallmark of the entrance to Mother of Mercy High School, an all-girls Catholic school in Cincinnati. The life-sized statue on a pedestal showed significant weathering and damage to fingers, thumbs, and toes.
Wiebold Studio's conservators worked onsite at the school to repair the damage to the statue's hands and feet, as well as surface chips in the base. The team also pressure-cleaned the entire statue, filled joints and sealed the entire statue. A concrete bench situated in the courtyard near the statue also received a thorough cleaning.
