Portrait Miniatures

Wiebold Studio is one of the few restoration firms that specializes in portrait miniatures.

Nearly fifty years ago, Mr. Bill Wiebold began the study and development of procedures to repair and restore portrait miniatures. These pieces of fine art/jewelry demand precision in concentration and technique. The delicate nature of these pieces requires that restoration be executed properly the first time.

Most often a portrait miniature is created with watercolor on ivory, however there are portrait miniatures that are painted on vellum or in oil on copper. Because these pieces are small and have been handled to a great extent, they may have developed any number of problems. A portrait miniature that has been exposed to moisture or humidity may have warped or cracked. The miniature may have mildew spots on the surface or the delicate watercolor may have been damaged. If the case is missing or damaged, the portrait miniature may have sustained scratches, cracks or bediscolored with dirt and grime. Though it is a delicate process, the afore-mentioned problems can be addressed and remedied.

The frame or case for a portrait miniature is just as unique as the miniature itself. The case provides vital protection for the miniature from the damaging environment. Each frame is custom designed and created to only fit the miniature it is designed for. Through extensive research we have determined the appropriate frame for the period in which the miniature was created. This catalog is an overview of the custom reproduction frames that we offer. It will continue to expand and change to meet the needs of portrait miniature collectors.

Hairwork

Hairwork Miniatures Options
Original hair in the back of a portrait miniature can provide a genuine link to the past. Hair may be adorned with seed pearls or strands of gold or formed into intricate patterns. Often with age, the adornments or the hair itself has begun to disintegrate. Wiebold can address these problems and preserve this link to the past.
